Lake Wales has the oldest population of the Polk cities I cover, so two dates matter most here: your one-time Medigap window and the yearly October 15 to December 7 plan change period. I'm Jeannie Pond, NPN 8940178, a Medicare agent based in Lakeland, and I meet people in Lake Wales by appointment, or help over the phone or Google Meet. AdventHealth Lake Wales is the hospital to check in any plan.

More than a quarter of Lake Wales residents are 65 or older, according to the Census Bureau. If you're one of them, your questions may be about what comes after signing up: should I keep this plan, can I change my Medigap policy, is my hospital still covered? My name is Jeannie Pond, licensed since 2009 and living over in Lakeland, and as your Medicare agent I'll answer them without pressure, sitting down with you by appointment or on a phone or Google Meet call.

Your Medigap window and your yearly review

  • Medigap's window opens once

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months, starting the first month you have Part B and you're 65 or older, and Medicare.gov is clear that it doesn't repeat. Florida law sets the same six months. Outside it, federal law usually gives you no right to switch policies, so if you're nearing 65, that window goes on the calendar first.

  • Every fall, a fresh look at your plan

From October 15 to December 7 each year you can join, drop or switch a Medicare Advantage or drug plan, Medicare.gov explains, with the change starting January 1. Each fall your plan also sends an Annual Notice of Change listing what changes in January, and we can read it together before you decide.

  • AdventHealth Lake Wales, before you switch

AdventHealth Lake Wales on South 11th Street is the hospital CMS Care Compare lists in town. A new plan's network can differ from your old one, so before you switch, the hospital and the doctors you see go into that plan's provider directory search, not just a glance at a flyer.

  • Social Security from Lake Wales

Questions about Medicare itself go to 1-800-MEDICARE. For the business Social Security handles, its locator puts the Winter Haven office first for ZIP 33853, 13.9 miles off by its count, with Lakeland second, and a my Social Security account can save you the trip.

Choosing once at 65, then checking every fall

If you have a Medigap policy now, my page on Medicare Supplement plans covers how they work, and my Plan G vs Plan N comparison shows where the two differ. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, we'll go through the yearly notice together each fall.

And if a dentist or a hearing test is on your list, we can look at dental, vision and hearing coverage too.

Switching plans in Lake Wales: common questions

Can I change my Medicare plan every year?

Yes, for Medicare Advantage and drug plans. Between October 15 and December 7 you can join, drop or switch, and the new plan starts January 1. Medigap is different: there's no yearly switching window under federal law.

Can I switch Medigap policies later in Lake Wales?

Sometimes, but not on a schedule. Medicare.gov says that in most cases you won't have a federal right to switch Medigap policies, so an insurer can usually look at your health. If you're thinking about it, call me before you cancel anything.

Where's the nearest Social Security office to Lake Wales?

Social Security's locator lists Winter Haven, at 1395 NW Havendale Blvd, first for ZIP 33853, then Lakeland. You can also call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or use a my Social Security account online.
