Medigap in Virginia

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months and starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and you're 65 or older. It doesn't repeat every year.

Virginia adds a yearly chance of its own. Since July 1, 2025, its Medigap Birthday Rule gives a Virginia resident who has a Medigap policy issued in Virginia a 60-day window starting on their birthday each year. In that window you can switch to a Medigap policy with the same benefits, Plan G to Plan G for example, from any insurer selling Medigap in Virginia, and the insurer can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health.

Your current insurer has to send you a notice 15 to 30 days before the window opens. Moving to a plan with more or fewer benefits can still mean health questions, a deductible you have already met may not carry over, and the rule does not apply to Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans.
